Technical note

How DT1 and JPG differ in practice

Every cell in a DT1 file holds a measurement rather than a colour, usually elevation in metres, running from sea level up to whatever the highest point in the tile happens to be. JPG stores brightness, so the conversion stretches that range across a grey or colour scale. What you get is a readable picture of the terrain, and it is the right thing for a relief map or a figure. What you no longer have is the data: sampling a pixel in the JPG returns a shade, not an altitude. Missing cells in an elevation grid, such as water, radar shadow or the edge of a survey, are not empty: they hold a sentinel value, -32768 in SRTM, -32767 in DTED and very often -9999 in ESRI grids. Counted as a real height, that value stretches the scale so far that the actual terrain collapses into a few near-identical shades. When a JPG output looks flat and washed out, a void treated as data is the usual cause.

Map Data Workflow

Turn GIS data into something anyone can open

Not everyone who needs to see DT1 data has GIS software. reaConverter renders it to JPG for a report, an email or a slide, and handles a whole folder in one run.

  • Render every file in a folder to JPG with the same size and settings
  • Set DPI and output dimensions before the run, not afterwards
  • Stamp a text watermark, such as a project name or a date, on every image
  • Pick up new data automatically with Watch Folders, or script the job from the command line

Everything runs on your PC, which matters for cadastral, utility and client data that should not pass through an upload form.

I run a small real estate agency, and we take hundreds of property photos in RAW. Converting them to JPEG for listings used to be a nightmare – until reaConverter. Now I just drop all CR2 files into the batch, set output to JPEG, and within minutes I have web-ready images. The quality is pristine, and the file sizes are perfect for our site.
