DT1 to PNG: what to expect from the conversion

Every cell in a DT1 file holds a measurement rather than a colour, usually elevation in metres, running from sea level up to whatever the highest point in the tile happens to be. PNG stores brightness, so the conversion stretches that range across a grey or colour scale. What you get is a readable picture of the terrain, and it is the right thing for a relief map or a figure. What you no longer have is the data: sampling a pixel in the PNG returns a shade, not an altitude. The digit in DT1 is the DTED level, and the level fixes the sample spacing: 30 arc-seconds for level 0, about 900 m at the equator, 3 arc-seconds for level 1, about 90 m, and 1 arc-second for level 2, about 30 m. Enlarging the PNG afterwards produces a bigger image, not finer terrain, so start from the level the job actually needs.
