Questions & Answers
DT1 files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are DT1 files?
DT1 (DTED Level 1 Elevation Raster) is a binary grid format that stores terrain heights for a one-degree geographic cell at a 3 arc-second post spacing, which yields a 1201 by 1201 matrix in low-latitude cells. The file contains an 80-byte User Header Label ("UHL"), a 648-byte Data Set Identification record ("DSI"), and a 2700-byte Accuracy Description record ("ACC"), after which each meridian column forms its own data record: a 0xAA sentinel, a block counter, longitude and latitude indices, the elevation samples, and a four-byte checksum. To keep cells roughly square on the ground, the east-west interval grows with latitude through five zones, from 3 arc-seconds near the equator to 18 arc-seconds near the poles, so higher-latitude cells hold fewer columns. Samples are big-endian 16-bit values in sign-magnitude form, with -32767 as the void marker. Rasterization requires decoding the sign-magnitude numbers, reversing the west-to-east, south-to-north order into a top-down image, and filling or masking voids. Heights are then scaled to a grayscale heightmap, colored with a hypsometric palette, or shaded as relief for PNG, JPEG, or TIFF, while GeoTIFF keeps the real values and extents. Global Mapper, QGIS, ArcGIS, ENVI, and Manifold GIS read this format.
