Each file represents a one-degree by one-degree geographic cell and contains terrain heights sampled at a regular interval of 3 arc-seconds, equal to approximately 90 to 100 meters at the equator. Level 1 sits between the coarser Level 0 (.dt0) and the finer Level 2 (.dt2) products, and serves as a common choice for regional terrain analysis, flight planning, line-of-sight studies, and mapping at medium scales. The file starts with header records that identify the cell, its origin, and its accuracy, followed by the matrix of elevations.
