Questions & Answers
GDB files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are GDB files?
GDB is a folder of files in which a geodatabase keeps all its data and the information about how the data fit together. Inside the folder, each table or feature class has its own file with the .gdbtable extension, which describes the fields, holds the geometry type and the coordinate system, and contains the rows, together with a .gdbtablx file that works as an index of the position of every row, similar to the .shx file of a Shapefile. Other files keep indexes and spatial indexes, and a set of system tables, whose names begin with GDB_, describe the contents, the relationships, the domains, and the metadata. Data sets can be grouped into feature datasets that share a coordinate system and may hold topologies, network datasets, terrains, and utility networks. By default, each table can reach 1 TB, and the limit can be raised to 4 or 256 TB for large images, while the number of rows in a table can go up to more than two billion. Several people can read at the same time, but editing is limited to one editor per data set. Datasets can be compressed to save space, which makes them read-only. A geodatabase can also be delivered as a ZIP file with the .gdb folder at its first level, such as the TIGER/Line files of the US Census Bureau. Supported by ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap.
