FAQ
GDB to MIF Conversion
What are GDB files?
GDB here is the Esri file geodatabase, the standard native storage of ArcGIS for geographic data. It is not a single file but a folder whose name ends in .gdb, and inside it the program keeps many data sets together: feature classes with points, lines, and polygons, tables of attributes, rasters, and the rules and relations that connect them, such as topology, networks, and subtypes. Esri introduced it in 2006 as a faster successor of the personal geodatabase and a more capable replacement of the Shapefile, and it is now the usual way to store and share GIS projects from ArcGIS. A single table may grow to a terabyte, and the geodatabase itself has no size limit. Because the data are kept as a folder, it is usually sent in a ZIP archive.
What are MIF files?
MIF is the file with the shapes in MapInfo's interchange format, which stores map data as a pair of text files. In the .mif file are the points, lines, and areas of a map layer, written as readable text with their coordinates, colors, and line styles, while the attributes of these objects, such as names and numbers, are kept in the partner .mid file. MapInfo is a desktop GIS program widely used in business, telecommunications, and local government, and the MIF and MID pair is its open way of passing data to and from other programs, since it can be read and edited in any text editor. A MIF file needs its MID file with the same name to be complete.
