Questions & Answers
MIF files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are MIF files?
MIF is a plain-text file that holds the shapes of a MapInfo map layer, together with the description of its attribute table. It has two parts. The header comes first and states the version of the format, the character set, optionally the delimiter used in the partner .mid file, the coordinate system in a CoordSys line, and a Columns line with the name and type of each attribute column. The word Data ends the header and begins the objects. Each object is written as a keyword with its coordinates: Point for a single place, Line for a straight segment, Pline for a polyline that may consist of several sections, Region for an area made of one or more polygons, and also Arc, Text, Rect, Roundrect, Ellipse, and, in later versions, multipoints and collections. Optional Pen, Brush, and Symbol clauses give the line style, the fill, and the point symbol, with codes for colors and patterns, so that the map keeps its look. The objects are matched in order with the lines of the .mid file. Version 300 and later allow multiple sections in lines and regions, and the later versions add more. The binary native form of MapInfo is the TAB format. Supported by MapInfo Professional, FME, and Cadcorp SIS.
