Questions & Answers
GFF images: Frequently Asked Questions
What are GFF files?
GFF (Ground-based SAR Applications Testbed File Format) is the native image format of Sandia National Laboratories for synthetic aperture radar data. A file starts with a header of variable length, which contains the instrument settings, image dimensions, and a flag that shows the byte order of the file. After the header comes a binary matrix in one of several pixel types: 16-bit or 32-bit complex numbers, or real values stored as bytes. Newer versions add header extensions, which carry extra metadata, such as the names of related image and phase files. For complex pixels, the file stores magnitude and phase, and since one of the drafts the phase always comes first, regardless of byte order. To convert a GFF file to graphics, a program reads the header, applies the byte order, and decodes the pixel type. Complex data are turned into an amplitude image, usually with logarithmic scaling, because radar returns span a very wide range of brightness, and are then stretched to 8 bits for PNG, JPEG, or TIFF. Phase can be exported as a separate image. Byte data can be saved directly as grayscale. Supported by MATLAB with Sandia's reader scripts.
