What are GSB files?
GSB (NTv2 Datum Grid Shift) is a binary file of the NTv2 standard that holds the corrections needed to move coordinates between two datums, for example from NAD27 to NAD83 in Canada. The file opens with a short overview block that starts with the text NUM_OREC and names the two datums, the units, which are normally seconds of arc, and the number of sub-grids. Each sub-grid then has its own small header with its boundaries and spacing, followed by one record per grid point. A record contains the shift in latitude, the shift in longitude, and, in many files, the accuracy of both. Sub-grids can be nested, so a densely measured region gets a finer net than the surrounding area. Longitude shifts are counted positive to the west. A GSB file is not a picture, but its values can be shown as one: a program reads the points, computes the size of the shift at each of them, and paints the grid with a color scale, so that the areas of large shifts stand out. Latitude, longitude, and accuracy can be exported as separate layers, which can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF.
