How GSB and WMF differ in practice

GSB is made of pixels and WMF stores geometry, so the conversion traces the image into paths. Once traced, the artwork scales to any size without softening, which is the point of the exercise. It is a reconstruction rather than the original drawing: curves are fitted to the pixel edges, so the cleaner and sharper the source, the closer the paths follow what the designer intended. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the WMF if they need to stay editable.

GSB (Grid Shift Binary) is the file extension of the NTv2 format, short for National Transformation version 2, developed in Canada by Natural Resources Canada for converting map coordinates from one geodetic datum to another. When old maps were based on one model of the Earth and new surveys use another, the same place ends up with slightly different coordinates, and a file of this type records how far each point has to move. It covers an area with a net of points and stores the shift in latitude and longitude at each of them, usually together with an estimate of the accuracy. What are WMF files?
