What are KRO files?
KRO (KOLOR Raw) is a raw image format with a very short header, which makes it fast to read and write. The first bytes are the letters KRO followed by a version byte, and then come the width and the height of the image, the depth of each color channel, which is 8, 16, or 32 bits, and the number of channels per pixel, which is 3 for RGB or 4 for RGB with transparency. All numbers in the header are stored with the most significant byte first, and the header is 20 bytes long. The pixels follow without compression, row after row, starting at the top-left corner. A 16-bit channel is an unsigned integer, and a 32-bit channel is a floating-point number, which allows the format to keep bright highlights beyond the normal range. There is no limit on the image size other than the limit of the file system. To convert a KRO file to graphics, a program reads the header, calculates the size of the data, and reads the pixels. High-bit images are scaled to 8 bits for PNG or JPEG, usually with a tone curve, while TIFF can keep 16-bit data, and floating-point data can be saved in formats for high dynamic range.
