How KRO and DWG differ in practice

KRO is made of pixels and DWG stores geometry, so the conversion traces the image into real lines, arcs and polylines. The result is editable in CAD: entities can be selected, snapped to and measured, rather than a bitmap wrapped inside a DWG container, which is what a viewer or a lightweight converter usually produces. It is still derived geometry, so expect contours rather than a structured drawing. Dimensions, blocks and meaningful layer names were never in the KRO to begin with. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the DWG if they need to stay editable.

KRO (Kolor Raw) is a simple, uncompressed image format created for the Kolor software, best known for its Autopano panorama stitching programs. Panoramas can be gigantic, and many common formats cannot hold pictures larger than about 30,000 pixels on a side, so the authors designed a format without such a limit. It stores color pictures with 8 or 16 bits per channel, or with floating-point numbers for high dynamic range images, with or without transparency. Because the pixels are saved without any compression, files are large, and the format is intended for temporary work between stages of processing rather than for sharing finished pictures.
