Questions & Answers
LAN images: Frequently Asked Questions
What are LAN files?
LAN (ERDAS 7.x multiband image) is a simple raster container for satellite and aerial scenes made of several spectral bands. The file begins with a 128-byte header whose first bytes spell HEADER, or HEAD74 in files from version 7.4 and later. The header records the pixel type, the number of bands, the number of columns and rows, and the location of the image on the map. Pixels are stored as 4-bit, 8-bit, or 16-bit values, and the bands are written one after another in order of band number, but line by line, so that each image row of the first band is followed by the same row of the second band, and so on. The header contains only limited coordinate system information, so projections are usually described by their units. A typical Landsat Thematic Mapper scene has seven bands. To convert a LAN file to graphics, a program reads the header, separates the bands, and chooses which three of them to show as red, green, and blue. True-color and false-color pictures with near-infrared are both common, and each band is stretched to the 8-bit range. A single band can be saved as a grayscale image. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF. Supported by ERDAS IMAGINE, TerrSet, Geomatica, ArcGIS, and MATLAB.
