Technical note

LAN to DWG: what to expect from the conversion

Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. DWG expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything. A line in an LAN image is several pixels wide, so tracing it can mean different things and the mode is yours to choose. Centreline returns a single line running down the middle of each stroke, which is what a scanned drawing needs: one entity per line, snappable and dimensionable, rather than a long thin rectangle around it. Outline follows both edges and returns closed shapes, which suits clipart, logos and anything that will be filled or cut. A precision setting controls how closely the traced paths follow the pixel edges. One thing to plan for: vectorised output from this path is black and white, so colour in the LAN does not survive as colour in the DWG.

Map Data Workflow

From map data to a working drawing

Site plans, utility routes and parcel boundaries often start out as LAN and end up in DWG. reaConverter turns the layers into drawing entities in batch, so a full project folder moves across in one run.

  • Convert every layer in a folder to DWG with the same settings
  • Go the other way too, from DWG to Shapefile, when the GIS team needs the drawings back
  • Render the same data to PDF for a quick review copy
  • Pick up new data automatically with Watch Folders, or script the job from the command line

Everything runs on your PC, which matters for cadastral, utility and client data that should not pass through an upload form.

I needed to convert DWG to DXF for a laser cutter, and reaConverter did it flawlessly. The geometry remained intact, and the line weights were preserved. I've tried free tools, but they always mess up arcs. This is the only one I trust.
