What are MAPML files?
MAPML is a text file that describes one layer of a web map in a form close to HTML, so that a browser or a map viewer can show it on a page. The specification calls it an extended subset of HTML for maps, and the files have the media type text/mapml. A layer contains one or more extent elements, which tell where and at which zoom levels the data are available and how to ask a server for more of them, with inputs for the zoom level and the tile column and row, and links that give the address template of the tiles. Individual map features are described by feature elements, each with its geometry, an optional caption, and its properties. Links work in the same way as on ordinary pages, which allows one map document to lead to another. To place a map on a page, an author uses the mapml-viewer element, with map-layer elements inside it, and until browsers support this natively, a JavaScript polyfill from the community group provides it. The format is not a finished standard and may change as it develops, and servers such as GeoServer can produce MapML for their WMS, WMTS, and WFS layers.
