The goal of the format is to make maps a native part of the web, so that a map can be placed on a page with a single tag, without any special programming, and so that search engines and assistive technologies can understand it. It is developed by the Maps for HTML Community Group of the W3C and is still an experimental proposal, but it is already used in services such as those of Natural Resources Canada and in GeoServer.
