What are MIDI files?

A MIDI file with the long .midi extension is the same Standard MIDI File format as .mid, and it describes a composition note by note. Each track of the file is a stream of events with delta times counted in ticks of a quarter note, and the events carry the start and end of every note with its key number and velocity, program changes that choose the instrument, and meta events for the tempo, the time signature, the key, markers, and text. A tempo event can change the speed at any point of the song, and several tracks, usually one for each instrument or channel, together form a full arrangement. This is enough to rebuild the written score: a notation program reads the pitches and the lengths of the notes, splits the music into bars according to the time signature, assigns the tracks to staves, and adds clefs, key signatures, and rests. The result is shown as sheet music that can be edited, played back, and printed. Because the timing is a recording of a performance, the program may simplify complicated rhythms when it writes the notes out.
