Questions & Answers
MPR files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are MPR files?
MPR (ILWIS Raster Map) is the text half of a two-file raster map, in which the .mpr file describes the map and a binary file with the same name and the .mp# extension holds the cell values. When pyramid layers are built for fast display of large maps, a third file with the .mpy# extension is added. The description names the domain of the map, which decides how the values are stored and interpreted: image values such as reflectance, classes such as land use, plain numbers such as elevation, plot identifiers, true or false values, or colors. It also names the georeference, a separate .grf file that fixes the position of the corners of the grid, in the case of corner-based georeferencing, and thereby the cell size. Supported pixel types include bytes, 16-bit and 32-bit integers, and 64-bit floating-point numbers. To convert an MPR map to graphics, a program reads the description, opens the data file, and restores the values according to the domain. Value maps are painted with a grayscale or color ramp, class maps are painted with the colors of their classes, and picture or color maps are saved as they are. Three maps can also be combined into an RGB picture. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with coordinates. Supported by ILWIS and Geomatica.
