MPR is the raster map file of ILWIS (Integrated Land and Water Information System), a GIS and remote sensing program developed at the ITC in the Netherlands for land use, water management, and environmental studies. A raster map is a grid of square cells, and every cell carries a value, such as a height, a reflectance recorded by a satellite, a land use class, or a plot number. The .mpr file is the readable description of such a map, and it points to the file that holds the cells, to the georeference that places the grid on the ground, and to the domain that explains what the values mean. What are PGM files?
The PGM or Portable Graymap format is part of a package of open source graphics programs called Netpbm. Other Netpbm formats include PPM (Portable Pixmap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap), also known under the collective name of PNM (Portable Anymap). A PGM file includes a grayscale image, can work on a UNIX platform, as well as on Windows or Mac OS X, and can render a scope of up to 255 grayscale colors.
