What are MRF files?
MRF (Meta Raster Format) is a tiled raster format designed for fast access from web servers and cloud storage. It splits a dataset into three files, each with its own job. The file with the .mrf extension is a short XML document that lists the size of the image in rows and columns, the data type, the tile size, the compression, the number of overview levels, and the georeference. The data file holds the tiles, which may be stored as a pile of PNGs with the .ppg extension, as a pile of JPEGs with the .pjg extension, or with other methods such as LERC, which is suited to elevation and scientific data. The index file with the .idx extension is a simple binary table of the position and size of every tile in the data file. Because tiles that do not exist take no space in the index, a dataset with gaps stays small, and a tile can be replaced by writing a new version and updating the index. The tiles form a pyramid, with level zero at full resolution. To convert an MRF dataset to graphics, a program reads the XML, uses the index to fetch the tiles it needs, decodes them, and assembles the picture at the chosen resolution.
