FAQ
MRF to SHP Conversion
What are MRF files?
MRF (Meta Raster Format) is a format for very large images, such as global satellite mosaics, that was developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to serve maps to web browsers quickly. The picture is divided into many small square tiles, and the tiles are stored at several levels of detail, from the whole image at full resolution down to small overviews. A viewer needs to load only the few tiles that are visible, which makes it practical to browse images of enormous size. An MRF dataset is made of three files: a small readable file with the .mrf extension that describes the image, a data file with the tiles, and an index file with the .idx extension that tells where each tile is. NASA uses the format for its Global Imagery Browse Services, and Esri has helped to develop it further.
What are SHP files?
The SHP (Shapefile) format stores vector files compatible with various Geographical Information System (GIS) software. SHP was developed by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), an American provider of GIS software and geodatabase management solutions, with the aim of improving interoperability between GIS software produced by ESRI and other developers. An SHP file usually contains vectorial descriptions of geospatial data (e.g. rivers, lakes), including specific attributes.
