What changes when you convert ND2 to JPG

ND2 is an N-dimensional acquisition rather than a picture. One file can hold several fluorescence channels, a stack of focal planes, a time series and a mosaic of stitched tiles, each recorded separately by the camera. JPG is a flat image format, so those dimensions have to be resolved into ordinary pictures, and which result is the right one depends on the work: a merged colour composite suits a figure or a presentation, while separate greyscale planes are what quantification needs. A scientific camera records 16 bits per pixel, and the signal of interest often occupies a narrow slice of that range, while JPG shows 8. Conversion applies a display mapping, so two acquisitions that look identical afterwards can hold very different underlying intensities. Treat the JPG output as something to look at and publish rather than something to measure.
