What are PARQUET files?
PARQUET is a compressed table file in which a column of geographic shapes has been marked, so that mapping programs know what it is. A geometry column holds the shapes in the standard Well-Known Binary encoding, and the file carries extra information under a key named geo in its metadata. That information gives the version of the specification, the name of the main geometry column, the encoding, the list of geometry types present, such as Point or Polygon, the coordinate system as PROJJSON, and optionally the bounding box and a coordinate epoch. If no coordinate system is given, the data are assumed to be longitude and latitude on WGS 84. Version 1.1 added a bounding box stored for each feature in an ordinary column, so that a reader can skip whole groups of rows outside the area of interest without decoding any shapes. The table is divided into row groups with statistics for each, which allows such skipping and also lets a program read only the columns it needs. A newer version, 2.0, which is still a release candidate, relies on the geometry and geography types now built into Parquet itself. A Parquet file with no geo metadata is an ordinary table without a map meaning. Supported by QGIS, DuckDB, and Apache Sedona.
