What are ZARR files?
ZARR is a hierarchical store of chunked, compressed N-dimensional arrays, which in practice is a folder rather than a single file. Small JSON files describe the contents: in version 2 they are .zgroup for a group, .zarray for an array, and .zattrs for user attributes, and in version 3 each group and array has a zarr.json file. An array record gives the shape, the data type, the chunk size, and the codecs used for compression, and every chunk is stored under a key that is built from its position in the grid. Because the chunks are independent, only the ones that are needed are fetched, which works well with object storage in the cloud, and version 3 adds sharding, which packs several chunks into one object. A store can also be zipped into a single file. The format has no place for a coordinate system, so georeferencing is stored in attributes by convention. To convert a Zarr array to graphics, a program opens the store, lists the arrays, selects one, and fixes all but two dimensions, for example one time and one level, to get a slice. It reads only the chunks that cover the slice, applies the scale and offset or the fill value if the metadata declares them, and paints the values with a grayscale or color ramp. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with the coordinates.
