G3N files contain digitally archived documents that were sent or received using Imaging Fax, a currently obsolete application that allowed computers equipped with modems to communicate with independent fax machines. Such images are stored using Group 3 compression, which provides an optimal minimisation of file size through a line-by-line compression of text and helps effectively compress white space. Group 3 compression was superseded by Group 4, providing a lossless compression of black-and-white images. G3N files are now considered uncommon.
