What are NTF files?
NTF files can contain either military imagery or British map data, and the beginning of the file tells them apart. An imagery file of the National Imagery Transmission Format starts with the word NITF followed by a version such as 02.10, and consists of a file header and segments for images, graphics, and text, with compression such as JPEG or JPEG 2000. The British National Transfer Format, standardized as BS 7567, is a plain-text format in which every record is a line of at most eighty characters, and longer entries are continued on further lines. The first two characters of a record give its type. A volume header record with the code 01 names the donor of the data and the version and level of the format, a database header record with the code 02 describes the product, a section header record with the code 07 gives the origin of the coordinates of one section, point and line records carry the features, attribute records carry their codes and values, geometry records carry the coordinates, and a volume terminator with the code 99 ends the file. The levels range from 1 to 5: contours of the Land-Form PANORAMA product use level 1, other products such as Meridian, Strategi, and Boundary-Line use level 3, and level 5 adds a data dictionary and is used for elevation grids. Features are points and lines, and polygons are built from them.
